Restless Legs Syndrome and Treatment for Venous Insufficiency in Buffalo Niagara and Southern Ontario, Canada
Saturday, August 10, 2013

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is one of the most common movement disorders known that remains relatively under diagnosed and under recognized within the neurology community and among movement disorders specialists.  The American Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation refers to restless legs syndrome as “the most common disorder you have never heard of”.

Restless legs syndrome is a chronic condition which results in discomfort or pain in the legs and occasionally in the arms and trunks causing the patient much distress. RLS impacts on the ability to sleep and affects the patient’s quality of life indicators (QOL).

Presence of restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movements during sleep amongst Caucasians has been estimated to be approximately 10% and appears to increase with age.

The onset of restless legs syndrome occurs before the age of 20  in up to 40% of cases.

Restless legs syndrome and restlessness of the legs are associated with venous insufficiency. Patients with either condition who have concomitant venous insufficiency have been shown to benefit from treatment with EVLT laser therapy.
