Venous Thromboembolism after Hip or Knee Surgery
Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Reports of the incidence of symptomatic postoperative pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) before hospital discharge in patients who received venous thromboembolism prophylaxis with either a low-molecular-weight heparin or a subcutaneous factor Xa inhibitor or oral direct inhibitor of factors Xa or IIa is not known.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) volume 307: pages 294-303 looked at the "literature-based estimate of symptomatic venous thromboembolism event rates prior to hospital discharge in patients undergoing total or partial hip arthroplasty or total or partial knee arthroplasty".

Researchers fromthe Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, Lausanne University Hospital, Switzerland showed using a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials and observational studies that "using current venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, approximately 1 in 100 patients undergoing total or partial knee arthroplasty and approximately 1 in 200 patients undergoing total or partial hip arthroplasty develops symptomatic venous thromboembolism prior to hospital discharge".
