What is Post thrombotic syndrome ? What is postphlebitic syndrome ? What are the signs and symptoms of postthrombotic syndrome ?
Sunday, December 2, 2012

For those who are at risk of developing post thrombotic syndrome, knowing the signs and symptoms that mark this condition is important. It’s also important to understand that these symptoms might not present immediately. In fact, it can take up to two years before symptoms begin to present. According to Van Dongen and colleagues, published in the Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (volume 3, pages 939-942, 2005), “about 30% of patients with an episode of adequately treated DVT develop the post thrombotic syndrome within 2 years”.

The Most Common Signs of Post Thrombotic Syndrome

The symptoms of PTS are quite similar to what patients with deep venous thrombosis experience, and bear a striking resemblance to many other venous diseases of the leg. The most common symptoms include the following:

  • A feeling of heaviness in the leg
  • Aching
  • Cramps
  • Itching
  • Tingling
  • Swelling in the leg
  • Skin discolorations (brown or white)
  • Varicose veins
  • Tiredness in the leg
  • Bluish discoloration in the foot, toes or leg
  • Eczema
  • Bursting pain
  • Paresthesia
